Blended Greens? That sounds gross!
Trust me, I had the exact same reaction when I first stumbled upon a green smoothie forum post. The truth is, though, if you use a good recipe and a mild green like spinach, you won’t even taste the greens. This is great, because you will get all the nutritional benefits that come with the greens, without the taste.
Ok, I’m ready to give it a shot. Where do I start?
First, you will need a blender. You can’t make a smoothie without a blender. Any household blender will usually suffice. There are several preferred blenders which can cost a few hundred dollars, but you don’t need one of these right away. You should try a few smoothie recipes first, and see if you’ll be continuing to drink green smoothies before you spend a few hundred dollars on a blender.
You will need some frozen sweet fruit (pineapple, strawberries, blueberries, etc.). For your first smoothie, pick some of your favorite fruits for your first smoothie. If your favorites are apples or bananas, or some other fruit that isn’t normally available frozen, you can use these fruits unfrozen, and mix them with some frozen berries of your choice.
Next, you will need to decide what type of greens to use. The thing that you should be concerned about as a green smoothie noob is the strength of the taste of the green. I refer to this as the “earthiness”. Greens like Collard and Turnip greens have a much earthier, bitter flavor than greens like kale or spinach. So for your first smoothie, try spinach or kale as your green.
Why should I drink green smoothies?
Green smoothies are PACKED with nutrients. Most people know that fruits and vegetables are dense in vitamins and minerals, but not everyone is aware of the nutritional content of green leafy vegetables. These green leafy vegetables, many which are known as cruciferous greens, provide some of the most essential nutrients for a healthy body. They are also an excellent source of:
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin A
- Soluble Fiber
Because green smoothies are blended, the nutrients in the vegetables are more bio-available. In essence, blending the fruits and vegetables does some of the work that your digestive system would normally do. When you consume a green smoothie, you don’t need to chew it to start to break it down; it’s already been broken down! The nutrients from the fruits and vegetables in the smoothie are available to be absorbed as soon as they hit the intestinal tract.
Benefits of Green Smoothies
- Great Skin – Many people have reported a decrease in acne, psoriasis, and other skin ailments. Others have noticed more radiant, glowing skin. This is most likely credited to the green leafy vegetables.
- Weight Loss – When your body is deficient in nutrients, you may become hungry. A green smoothie is packed with many of the nutrients that your body needs, but is not packed with a lot of calories.
- Increased Energy – Think of green smoothies as oil in an automobile engine. In order to run smoothly and operate for a long time, an engine needs to be properly maintained with oil. Your body is no different; it is able to maintain itself, but can only operate smoothly with the right nutrients.
